Music at St Nicholas Cathedral Newcastle
There is a wide variety of music to be heard in Newcastle Cathedral ranging from the singing at choral services most days by one or other of the cathedral's excellent choirs, weekly organ recitals on the extensive and exciting cathedral organ, a range of other concerts featuring groups as varied as the Avison Ensemble and The Medieval Babes!
Choirs
Daily Choral Services are sung most days at 5.30pm (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday and Fridays) with Choral Eucharist at 10am and Choral Evensong at 6pm on Sundays. These may be sung by any of the following choirs:
- Boys' Choir made of boys aged from 7 to 14
- Girls' Choir comprising girls from 10 to 18
- The Gentlemen of the Choir, some of whom are choral scholars studying at one of the nearby Universities and others who are local professionals
- The Cathedral Consort which draws upon singers, often past boy or girls choristers, mostly from local sixth forms and universities
The men will usually sing with either the boys or the girls, and for special occasions all the choirs may join together.
The Lanterns is an introductory choir for young singers from the age of 6 upwards and is an excellent preparation for one of the main cathedral choirs
Concerts and Recitals
In addition to the regular Lunchtime Organ Recitals on Mondays at 1pm (during termtime) there are many other concerts and recitals throughout the year. Look at the events page for details.
